Before 9/11 most Americans were largely unaware of the Muslim-American community in the US. After 9/11 Americans are much more aware of Muslim citizens and communities in their cities. There were a handful of violent religiously motivated acts shortly after 9/11 but as a result many more people and media outlets began to give a lot of attention to Muslim-Americans and this led to a general call for greater understanding and harmonious coexistence. Also, after 9/11 Some Muslim-American groups have protested against what they consider excessive: screening at airports scrutiny of Muslim-American charities FBI wiretap requests
The Obama administration recently eliminated a Bush program to screen airline passengers from 14 countries (most of them Muslim-majority) more than other passengers.
