How many Muslim people do you know?

  1. Hello, this is Daniel Perez, an English Language Fellow teaching English in Bulgaria. I used to teach English at a small community college located in Austin, Texas. I had several students that were Muslim. The class I taught was a mix of students from around the world and we all got along great! It was so much fun having so many different backgrounds in one room, so many opinions that came from different upbringings.
I also have a friend who is Muslim from Sengal. He married a good friend of my wife's and we used to hang out all the time while we were still living in Austin. We used to talk about his life in Sengal and how much fun it was. We never really spoke about religion, but I hope to visit them sometime as they have returned to Africa and speak to him about it.
Interestingly, his wife is Catholic and they always spoke of having two weddings. The Catholic one was held in her homeland of Angola and the Muslin celebration has yet to occur (as far as we know).
So, although I have met some Muslims in America and taught several Muslim students, I really only "know" one.

  2. In my undergraduate school, many of my friends were Muslims. They came to study in the U.S. as engineers and computer science majors mostly. One of my best friends, Sadiq is from Saudia Arabia, and I also have friends from Kuwait, Syria, Oman, and Egypt. I'm now in Graduate School at the Monterey Institute of International Studies and I often hang out with my friends from Oman and Syria. Some of my western friends have also taught and lived in the Middle East. I definitely feel my life is more rich and interesting because of my Muslim friends and I value their sense of humor and loyalty as friends.
